Lighting the Circus

The Circus should need no introduction as one of Bath's most iconic landmarks and we were thrilled to help facilitate the restoration of the last remaining Georgian overthrow of this famous address. This project was for the betterment of a maisonette in one of the Circus's townhouses: to install underfloor heating (without lifting the original Georgian floorboards), to create an invisible jib door into the kitchen, and to restore a Georgian fireplace that had been altered in the early 20th century. Finally, to design a new lantern and wiring system for the overthrow, restore the remaining wrought ironwork, whilst also retaining the historic integrity of this important feature. The overall intent was to increase the usability of the maisonette whilst adding to, and highlighting, the character of this celebrated example of Georgian architecture. This challenge was achieved by diligent, complex, research and by producing extremely detailed drawings for the listed building application. These pre-empted any queries from the Conservation Officer and Historic England (as a statutory consultee). Work is ongoing at the property and we look forward to seeing the Circus lit again - at least in one spot - in a way that evokes its storied past.
