Warming up the Cold Side
This project, in the west of Bath, includes a small rear infill extension, loft conversion and solar panels to the south facing front roof slopes. Part of our brief was to try to solve the problem of the north facing rooms being significantly more cold and drafty than the rest of the house. Part of the solution was to thermally upgrade the existing external walls at the back of the property. At first floor, this is to be rendered to match some of the neighbouring houses, while at ground floor the new extension is unified with the existing house by adding a new external leaf built from long format bricks. The rear side extension creates a new kitchen, dining space and music room and includes a glass roof to maximise light into the backroom of the house. As well as the addition of external wall insulation and solar panels, the clients opted to install a battery in order that they can store any extra energy that their solar panels generate. They also installed cabling and pipe-work to ensure that the house is heat pump ready once their existing boiler reaches the end of its working life.
